James Capellini was born in Chicago in 1964. He holds a degree in philosophy from the University of Tampa, and has been a student of meditation and spiritual practice for over twenty years. He has traveled widely in India, lived in a remote Baul ashram in Bengal, and taught philosophy and religion at the Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu, India. An enthusiastic musicologist, Capellini studies the music of the Bauls of Bengal and occasionally performs wearing traditional dress and playing the one-stringed ektara. For many years Jim directed The Baul Theatre Company, an amateur theatre troupe, and worked as the shop foreman for a mid-sized construction company. He currently lives in Arizona and Washington, where he manages construction projects.
